Champions League winners Barcelona defeated Europa League holders Sevilla in extra-time, providing Ivan Rakitić and Alen Halilović with the European Supercup trophy.

On Tuesday night in Georgian capital Tbilisi, Sevilla almost pulled off a stunning comeback after losing to Barcelona 4:1 in the second half. At 4:4, extra-time was needed, and Pedro scored the winner for the European champions.

Once again, Ivan Rakitić contributed greatly to another Barcelona success, this time playing a significant running role in Catalan giant's midfield.

Rakitić played the entire match, while Alen Halilović travelled with the first team to Georgia, but was not selected.

"These kind of matches are rare. It was a difficult match that could have been easier for us, but that's football. We are happy to start the season with a trophy, and for me it is always a special feeling to play against Sevilla. I wish them all the best and hope to see them in Champions League, while I'm proud of Barcelona's trophies", said Rakitić after the impressive encounter.

As Sevilla's captain, Rakitić won the Europa League in 2014, and secured the triple crown with Barcelona a year later.
