Croatia head coach Ante Čačić commented on Darijo Srna's goodbye to the Vatreni.

"I am convinced that Darijo did not make this decision easily, following a long and successful Croatia career, especially after very good performances at EURO 2016. We are all sorry to see him leave, but we respect and understand this decision.

Darijo helped me a lot when I took over the national team. I express my gratitude not only for that reason, but for his contribution as a player, his commitment, and everything he gave to the Vatreni - during my term as manager, and in all 14 years of international duty.

I do not hide that I shall miss him deeply, and so will the entire national team. He was a real leader on and off the field, and simultaneously brought charm, joy and a serious approach to every training session. As a true captain, he made sure to have a good atmosphere in the team, together with necessary responsibility and the level of professionalism. He was a real example to his teammates, and the younger players are in the best position to confirm how much Darijo's support has meant to them.

A person like Darijo does not appear every day, he really was a top captain. His 134 caps and 22 goals for Croatia speak for themselves. Looking back at his international career, I consider him the greatest Croatia captain ever. I believe this is not a final farewell, and that Darijo will remain a significant factor in Croatian football in the future. As a player, he gave an exceptional contribution to it".
