Croatian duo at Real Madrid, Luka Modrić and Mateo Kovačić, added another trophy to the collection, with Modrić earning even more individual praise.

At the Club World Championships in Japan, Champions League winners Real Madrid defeated Club America 2:0 in the semifinals, with Croatia captain Luka Modrić winning the Man of the Match award.

In the Yokohama final, Real Madrid topped Kashima Antlers in extra-time (4:2). Mateo Kovačić substituted Luka Modrić in 106th minute as both Croatia internationals made an appearance.

Luka Modrić was later awarded the Silver Ball, as the second-best player of the entire tournament. Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored a hat-trick in the final, won the Golden Ball, and double Kashima Antlers goalscorer Gaku Shibasaki earned the Bronze Ball.
