Upon the announcement of Lovren’s retirement, president of the Croatian Football Federation Marijan Kustić thanked Dejan Lovren for his great contribution to the successes of the Croatian national team.

Before he had published his open letter, Lovren had notified president Marijan Kustić and head coach Zlatko Dalić of his decision.

"Above all, I want to thank Dejan for everything he’s given for the Croatian national team since his debut in October of 2009. We will remember his brilliant performances at the World Cups in 2018 and 2022, and he was a key player in both medal-winning runs,” said HNS president Marijan Kustić.

"Along with his starring role on the pitch, Dejan was one of the leaders in our dressing room – his energy, his self-confidence, and his resolve were extremely important for our younger players. He always contributed to the fun, encouraging, positive spirit within our team, and while we will miss him as a player, I am sure he will remain close to his teammates and the national team. We wish Dejan the best with his career, as well as lots of health and happiness. The doors of the Croatian national team – which he played for with such pride – will always be open.”
