Upon return to Croatia, Nikica Jelavić informed head coach Niko Kovač of his decision to leave the national team.

Soon after the victory in Sofia, Croatian national football team traveled to Vukovar, where it will await the Monday qualifier against Azerbaijan. At Lav Hotel, Nikica Jelavić explained to head coach Niko Kovač that he is not satisfied with his status in the squad and will leave the national team.

"I have to admit that Jelavić surprised me and I am sorry to hear about his decision. Of course, I will accept it, and thank him form everything he has done for Croatia. I wish him all the best in life, including his club career", said head coach Kovač.

Hull City striker was capped 36 times, scoring six goals.
