Croatia head coach Niko Kovač congratulated Luka Modrić and Ivan Rakitić for winning prestigious Spanish awards.

Luka Modrić was awarded as the best centre midfielder in the last Primera season, with 34 league appearances.

"Winning such an award says enough for itself. Luka's continuous quality performances and his skills made sure he earns this kind of respect in Spain, in a competition full of quality midfielders", said Croatia head coach Niko Kovač.

"It is appropriate that Luka was given the award after the derby against Barcelona, where he has shown the brilliance of his talent, where he was one of the best on the field among so many stars of world football. I congratulate him for combining his talent with extraordinary work, and therefore he deserves awards like these. I wish him good health to continue with his performances", added Kovač.

Ivan Rakitić was also among the awarded. He was nominated for the best attacking midfielder, while he was presented with the fair-play award. The former Sevilla captain, now in the Barcelona ranks, emerged as a role model due to his good performances and professional approach to spots.

"My congratulations to Ivan as well. He is an excellent choice, being an example as a professional and an extremely fair athlete. He is a leader both on and off the pitch. Croatian football can be proud to have such two players in the greatest clubs in the world, especially considering the fact that besides footballing skills, they have praiseworthy human qualities and thus can serve as role models to young players", concluded Kovač.
